We are slowly working through our house, making changes, decluttering, and creating a space that reflects how we want to live now. (See our Kitchen and Bedroom) and we finally got to our workspace. We spend a lot of our time in this room, much more in fact than in our lounge. The art of juggling freelancing with family means we often find ourselves working in our evenings. Having a lovely, calm space in which to do it has made working in the evenings not only palatable, but vaguely enjoyable too.
Before our makeover, we had a mix of desks, both old tables, and neither fit for purpose. I spray painted the grey table years ago but it never set properly and was sticky (read infuriating) to use. The other was an old kitchen table from my sister in law which was too big for the room. We began with a huge clear out and sorted through all of our paperwork, burning whole binbags of the stuff on our fire! (bills from 2003, anyone?) Our paperwork is now organised into one concertina file, rather than a filing cabinet as before. We chucked out or gave away lots of other stuff too- old photography bits, craft stuff, fabric, prints etc. Then after giving away the old tables, we bough some IKEA Melltorp desks which will last us a long time. We added a pair of lamps from Urbanara and a small wall shelf each for us to display inspirational books, postcards and prints. We also put some plants on our desks and added a proper unit with boxes to store my misters photography kit.
I wrote up my tips for making your workspace work for you for ASOS Likes so click on over to see how I give myself the best chance to boss my to do lists (which may or may not involve talk of knickers)
Here is the after, featuring some of my desk essentials; a beautiful scented candle, a carafe of water, fresh flowers and plants and my aromatherapy roll on from BoHoBo.
The space is working brilliantly and we actually now like hanging out in here. Having the desks next to each other means we're close enough to see each others screens or have a sneaky kiss/steal each others snacks.
I really recommend a big office clear out if you haven't done one in a while, it makes such a difference to how I feel when I'm working.
How about you, where do you work?
