Happy December the first everyone! If you follow Davina on Instagram and twitter, you'll already know the very exciting news that the very beautiful baby Bonnie was born last week! I am so in love already and cant wait to meet her (newborn Squeeeel!) You'll also know that this Christmas, instead of Elfie opening a traditional advent calendar, she'll be visited daily by the advent gnome, who leaves a trail of glitter and a tiny treasure each morning. Davina is happily ensconced in her baby moon but said I could use some photo's (and even a sweet video!) of their adorable advent gnome tradition. We aren't doing an advent calendar this year, as part of our efforts to simplify things this Christmas, and also because it's probably the last year that I can get away with it as Frankie doesn't really know the difference! However I love Davina's advent idea so much, and cant wait to incorporate it into future Christmas traditions.
What I love most about the advent gnome is that the treasures can be very simple little things, like a little painted stones or shells. You could also include little notes and ideas from the gnome too: a cookie cutter with instructions for a gnome biscuit, or ideas to give a gift to someone else etc. This year Davina has wrapped 24 tiny buttons for Elfie, something I know Frankie would adore. Davina sent me a video of Elfie opening her first advent gift from the gnome this morning and her gasps of delight and wonder are heart melting. "Look! The glitter!"
If you are looking for a more traditional advent idea, Davina also has a brilliant tutorial for simple advent calendar bags which can be found here.
Are you celebrating advent this year? I feel torn between feeling like it is such a wonderful , memory-making, thing to celebrate, especially with kids; and feeling like it just adds a huge task to the already over-burdened to do list. Thats probably why I like the advent gnome so much, because it's quite simple and doesn't take too much preparation, money or planing! What do you think?
